In recent months, Chinese companies have moved in.
Brisbane's Gold Coast mine in South West Australia, which will open in November 2017, will produce up to 2,500 tonnes of gold each year. Gold Coast's project will be the first to mine gold within 200 kilometres of the city.
At the end of 2016, a Chinese investment fund had a bid totalling A$25 million (US$22 million) to purchase the 10-year leases on its mining lease at the north end of the North West Gold Project.
The developer in the A$25 million project is known as First Gold, and is owned by Hong Kong-based Goldcorp. A spokeswoman for First said the company was looking into options but would not comment further.
The Chinese Ministry of Mines is due to provide information in the first half of 2017 on its gold mine project in the north west.
But this project was rejected by the Queensland government and the prospect of the Chinese mining giant building a mine in a city near Brisbane is an embarrassment for Labor, which has a strong connection to the Gold Coast region.
It was last year that the Brisbane City Council put itself in the minority on the gold mine issue, voting down an earlier proposal by the Queensland Investment Agency to develop the mine.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has said she will not accept a bid from Chinese investors if it follows through on its earlier announcement about two mines.

Description released of man approaching children for sex
A man has been arrested on suspicion of raping two 10-year-old boys in the Stirling area of Edinburgh.
Detectives were called to the Royal Park Hotel on King Street in the early hours of Wednesday following reports of an assault.
Police described the offender as a man, aged 19, of large build. He was wearing a light-coloured polo shirt and black shorts.
The second victim told police he had been attacked in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Stirling. Police also took a statement from the first victim, who claims he was assaulted by him in the street on Tuesday morning.
He told officers he had been walking with a friend near the Royal Park Hotel when a man who he described as being in his mid-20s approached him on King Street, asking him for the same sex.
The first victim described the man as "in his mid-30s" to have "skinny arms and was wearing a medium-sized jacket that was all dark brown and red with white trim", police said.
Officers had spoken to the man, who was not the original victim, later that morning, during an incident check at a police cordon at King Street.
The man was interviewed by officers investigating a series of alleged sexual assaults in nearby areas of Stirling on Wednesday night, police said.
Detective Sergeant Gary Jones, from Scotland Yard, said: "This incident is believed to be an assault and it appears that a sexual assault took place on June 10, which is the date when I was called to investigate.
"The initial evidence is that, as I was speaking with the initial individual on the scene, it was apparent that there was a sexual aspect to the encounter.
"This is an extremely shocking incident which has happened on an important night for people in Edinburgh and I am particularly concerned about the victims.
"I would like to thank the officers who were involved in these incidents. This is not only a case of serious sexual assault, but is also a case of child exploitation. There's a huge amount of work to be done."
Police have released CCTV images of a car which they believe was involved in the reported assault.
Detective Sgt Jones added: "There are strong links between the victim and this man, and these connections should give you a flavour of the relationship between the men involved. They are not the same person.
"If anybody who has spoken to the victim has any information which they would like to share I would ask them to contact me via 101."
The National Crime Agency has launched a police investigation into the alleged sexual abuse that took place in Stirling following the release of footage of th
