Вопрос: Building slide worsens as reserve gets it wrong on curve
1/17/16: This slide appears to show the difference in a two-step curve and an open version. One may take issue with the fact that the three fingers pointed upwards are pointing backwards when seen from above, and that the curve also looks a bit worse when viewing from above the edge of the slide. This is a very interesting slide, and does not appear to be from the late 1950s.
View from above: The "basketcase" in the center of the slide appears to be somewhat wider than what you would expect from something so new and new. This is one of the few older slides I've seen.
A closer view of the left side of the slide. Notice that the three fingers are pointing in the direction the slide is tilted.
A closer view of the right side of the slide. Again, notice that the three fingers are pointing in the direction the slide is tilted.
I actually did the calculations for a three-finger version of this slide, using the old model, and came up with a slightly different one:
The difference is small, but it does appear to be somewhat significant to me. While this slide looks good on the surface, it is clearly a very different slide than the one shown in the image below.
The slide can be viewed here.
(2) This photo is also from the photo museum's collection. There are several versions of this picture and variations of the date. This is one that appears to be from 1950. Notice the difference in the center of the slide and the end result, where the bottom-of-the-backward "basketcase" is larger on the "open" version. The same angle reveals that this is an odd, three-finger version.
(3) I didn't make these three-finger photos myself, but I am fairly sure that a third of them are. At least one version of this picture, apparently from 1950, shows only one thumb. (I believe these pictures were made for use by the Museum of Flight.)
There are several different versions of this "basketcase" but the right-hand version appears to be very rare. It was discovered by a flight instructor who recognized a copy of this one on eBay back in February 2008, after it had disappeared from her desk drawer. However, I did manage to find the same photo on Amazon.com a few years later. For me, seeing a photo of this in print is a rare but exciting discovery.
