Cow sanctuary sunshine coast saving cows from slaughterhouse killing animals."
In addition to the "Save the Cow Sanctuary" campaign, which calls on state leaders to sign on to the Humane Slaughter and Animal Protection Act, a similar "Pelican Cove" campaign is also targeting Governor Cuomo. The activists have been meeting in Pelican Cove in an attempt to "drive a wedge" in the governor's office with promises of action, according to a press release from the activist organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
However, while they have already succeeded in pressuring Cuomo, the activists seem to have been unable to turn their attention elsewhere.
In an interview with the Gothamist this weekend, the man who leads the Pelican Cove group said that there have only been a few other opportunities to bring about change on behalf of livestock and dairy farmers in recent memory and the efforts they've been making are a testament to their collective strength.
"We've been successful," he said. "Our numbers have exploded across the country."
The campaign's success comes despite a recent spike in animal cruelty in the dairy industry, which has seen a 50 percent increase in milk cow deaths from 2014 to 2016. The numbers show a correlation between animal suffering and a spike in milk prices, and a decrease in the consumption of dairy products in the US.
Although the "Save the Cow Sanctuary" is likely a failure, it doesn't mean the group's campaign isn't worth trying to help the animals. While it is unclear how the group would handle legislation that makes it more difficult to kill animals without a prior judicial finding of animal cruelty, an effort like the one taken up by Pelican Cove could help galvanize lawmakers to take up such legislation.
Pelican Cove supporters argue it's unlikely the group would get support from elected officials, with its mission just a "lobby group to show our support," according to the release. "It's possible we'll find something, but we'll probably need to start somewhere else if this isn't enough."
